What are Ovarian Cysts?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form inside or on the surface of the ovary. Most are harmless and disappear naturally, but some may grow larger, cause pain, irregular periods, or affect fertility.

Types of Ovarian Cysts (Short)

  • Functional Cysts → Follicular & Corpus Luteum cysts, usually harmless, disappear on their own.

  • Dermoid Cysts → May contain hair, fat, or tissue; need surgery if large.

  • Endometriomas → “Chocolate cysts” linked with endometriosis, can affect fertility.

  • Cystadenomas → Fluid-filled cysts on the ovary surface, sometimes grow large.

  • Polycystic Ovaries → Multiple small cysts in PCOS, causing irregular periods & fertility issues.
