Home > What Does The Egg Freezing Process Involve?
If you’ve ever considered freezing your eggs, you might feel anxious about how complicated or medical it sounds — hormone injections, retrievals, and storage procedures can seem overwhelming. But once you understand the process, it becomes much simpler and more empowering.
In this blog, our fertility experts at Shree Navami Fertility Centre, Mancherial, explain the egg-freezing process step-by-step, helping you make an informed and confident choice for your future.
Your journey starts with a complete fertility assessment to evaluate your ovarian reserve, hormone levels, and ultrasound findings. If everything looks normal, you’ll begin a 10–12 day course of hormone injections that stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple mature eggs instead of just one.
During this time, your progress is monitored through regular scans and blood tests to ensure your ovaries respond well. Your doctor will adjust the dosage as needed to help produce healthy eggs.
Once your eggs reach maturity, your fertility specialist will give you a “trigger injection” to help with final egg development. Around 34–36 hours later, the eggs are retrieved in a short, minimally invasive procedure called Oocyte Pick-Up (OPU).
This procedure takes about 20–30 minutes and is done under mild anesthesia for comfort. No stitches or cuts are involved — the eggs are collected using a thin ultrasound-guided needle. Most women resume their regular activities within 24 hours, experiencing only mild bloating or cramping.
After retrieval, the eggs are checked for quality and maturity. The mature eggs are then frozen using a process called vitrification, a fast-freezing technique that prevents damage to the cell structure.
Your frozen eggs are safely stored in liquid nitrogen tanks at very low temperatures, preserving their quality for several years. You’ll receive a detailed report on the number of mature eggs collected and stored.
In India, eggs can typically be stored for up to 10 years or longer in special cases. The success of pregnancy depends more on the age at which the eggs were frozen than on how long they’ve been stored.
For example, eggs frozen at age 28–30 generally have higher success rates when used later compared to eggs frozen in the late 30s. That’s why many women choose to freeze their eggs early — to preserve their fertility and plan their future with confidence.
